JAMES Ltd Attends the EIC Cross Sector Decommissioning Conference in Blyth

This week, JAMES Ltd attended the EIC Cross Sector Decommissioning Conference in Blyth which is a timely and well‑attended event bringing together operators, regulators, trade bodies and specialists from across the decommissioning and energy transition landscape.

The conference was hosted at the Energy Central Learning Hub, an impressive facility that plays an important role within the local community. The hub provides specialised STEM education, vocational training and industrial skills development, helping prepare young people and adults for careers in the clean energy and offshore wind industries. It was great to see first‑hand how education, industry and regional investment are being brought together to support the future workforce.

While the weather did its best to challenge us courtesy of Storm Chandra,  the quality of discussion throughout the day more than made up for it, and we look forward to returning in better conditions next time.

Insight from Across the Decommissioning Sector

The event provided valuable insight from organisations representing different but equally important parts of the decommissioning landscape.

Trade associations such as Energy Industries Council (EIC) and Decom Mission shared perspectives on market trends, collaboration and capability development across the sector, highlighting the importance of shared learning as decommissioning activity continues to accelerate.

Regulatory insight was provided by the North Sea Transition Authority, with Alastair Bisset outlining developments within the offshore decommissioning landscape and the evolving regulatory context.

It was also particularly valuable to hear from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, with Heather Barton providing insight into activity across the UK’s nuclear estate — an area where JAMES Ltd is proud to be supporting work on nuclear sites as part of the wider decommissioning mission for the UK nuclear sector.

Regional Capability and Delivery in Practice

There were strong contributions throughout the day, including from our North East neighbours Thompsons of Prudhoe. Tom Koerner shared insight into work delivered at the Port of Blyth, including the development of the 2.3‑hectare offshore decommissioning yard at Battleship Wharf.

The presentation highlighted the growing importance of ports and regional infrastructure in supporting offshore decommissioning, energy transition activity and large‑scale asset retirement programmes.

Why Events Like This Matter

As decommissioning activity accelerates across multiple sectors, forums such as this play an important role in:

  • encouraging cross‑sector learning
  • sharing lessons from real projects
  • strengthening collaboration between operators, regulators and delivery partners
  • improving early‑stage planning and decision‑making

JAMES Ltd values the opportunity to engage in these discussions and remain closely connected to the evolving needs of the industry.

We would like to thank the organisers, speakers and attendees for an informative and well‑run event, and we look forward to continuing the conversation.
